BaselWorld 2011: Tag Heuer's 'Martian' 1/1000 Concept
Posted on 23.03.11
In Geneva in January TAG Heuer unveiled the Mikrograph Genesis limited edition piece which could measure upto 1/100th of a second and that too using the central second hand. TAG Heuer and Zenith are some of the few brands that use movements with high oscillating frequencies. The Genesis has two balance wheels and the Chronograph had a real muscular feel to it. This year TAG Heuer unveiled the Apollo Mikrotimer Flying 1000. The first day at BaselWorld 2011 closed with a rather eye-catching press conference by TAG Heuer. The brand has a history of announcing very interesting concept models at the event each year, many of which, must be said, will take years to to get commercialised and put into limited or regular production. Last year they unveiled the Pendulum concept, in which the balance spring inside the watch was replaced with a set of interacting magnets. The technical challenge here is to make a spring that can oscillate at high frequencies without failing or losing accuracy over time due to wear and tear.

The Tag Heuer Link Chronograph features a fixed bezel with a tachymeter scale. In the Calibre S Chronograph, instead of the commonly used round subdials, Tag Heuer employs a pair of semi-circles. Somewhat similar to the iconic Aquaracer, the Link is a multi-purpose watch: designed as a sports chronograph, its visual and structural qualities catapult it to the high sphere of refined business and formal wear. Automatic and quartz models without the chronograph functionality take on a more casual sports look, presenting a less formal alternative. The polished steel bezel in these watches grows wider and more akin to Tag Heuer Formula 1 and Aquaracer. Tag Heuer Link Design. Tag Heuer Link is a relatively new collection, but already on its way to become a modern classic. Still, both types of Link watches opt for the understated monochrome logo, eliminating unnecessary color from the dial.
