Local jewelers say Cleveland couples rarely ask to see rings that mimic a celebrity's, at least not since Princess Diana rocked the same rock as Middleton. Bloomberg Businessweek reported in December that Middleton's blue sapphire engagement ring boosted gem exports from Sri Lanka -- known for its sapphires -- by 37 percent last year, bringing exports to $77 million through October 2011. When it's time to choose an engagement ring, jewelry experts say couples should always consider the four C's of gemstones: cut, clarity, color and carat weight. Rocks weighing down the hands of everyone from Kate Middleton to Britney Spears have become a factor in ring shopping by commoners around the world. According to the trade publication Accessories Magazine, "Celebrity (and royal) engagement rings have long been the subject of envy -- and imitation. The latest issue of Martha Stewart Weddings might say colored diamonds and other gems are hot -- sorry, they are not hot in Cleveland. Middleton's blue sapphire was one of the two most requested celebrity styles last year, Bridalguide. "We really don't see celebrity-look requests," said Debbie Yeager, co-owner of Yeager Jewelers in Westlake. But many couples these days go shopping with a fifth C in mind: celebrity.
